The trailer for A24’s new film Y2K has just arrived, and frankly, it’s absolutely insane. Exactly what you’d expect from Kyle Mooney’s Saturday Night Live sketches. Anyone who watches it will think nothing is going right in the film, but it’s meant well. The film will be released at South by Southwest (SXSW) in March 2024, and then in theaters on December 6, 2024, when the year is coming to an end, and it will give off a very different vibe. The Y2K film, with its strange combination of 90s nostalgia, some disaster horror and a laugh-out-loud crazy comedy, will take the cinematic experience of 2024 in a fun and quirky direction.
The trailer shows us the last day of the year in 1999 when the New Year’s Eve party was nothing special, but there was a twist to that party. It’s 1999 when the Y2K bug has people panicking and appliances stopping working. In the trailer, we see people running around, upset about the technology world breaking down.
A teenage boy named Eli (played by Jaeden Martell) decides to throw a blast at this New Year’s party. And what a party it is! A party where he and his best friend plan to start anew. That is his best friend – who we know as Julian Dennison from Deadpool 2 – gets completely involved in the madness. The two don’t go with the intention of having a fun party but with the sole intention of doing something crazy about the Y2K bug.

When the two reach the party, they suddenly meet another girl – Rachel Ziegler, and as soon as she arrives, things change completely. What little peace there was is gone. Madness begins. What will happen? Who knows! Ellie and her friends face so many issues that it’s hard to understand if all these incidents are really happening because of the Y2K bug or if it’s all due to some other reason. And yes, the film also stars Eduardo Franco, who played Argyle in Stranger Things. Apart from this, Daniel Zogadri (who was also in the eighth grade) will also be seen as CJ.
When we talk about Kyle Mooney, this trailer perfectly reflects his creative style. Mooney has always been working in a fun and slightly crazy style. If you have seen his work then you will know that this trailer is his work, because there is some laughter and unexpected events everywhere throughout the film. Mooney also has a character of his own – as Garrett and Alicia Silverstone is also in it as Robin. To top it all, Fred Durst himself will be seen in a cameo role! Crazy, right? All of this makes it seem like the film will take you on a rollercoaster ride with surprises at every turn.

Apart from this, another interesting thing is that The Kid LaRoi will also be seen in a small but interesting role in the film – his character is “Soccer Chris”. Is this character really going to do something special for the film? Or will it just be a fun cameo? Only time will tell.
As far as the film’s soundtrack goes, I think it will be a perfect match with the music of the late 90s. The tunes and music heard in the trailer perfectly reflect the reality of that time, when everyone was terrified of the Y2K bug. The film perfectly captures the scary but fun image of that time, and I think it will have a huge impact on future pop culture.
Overall, Y2K looks like a film that will not be boring. There will be something new and interesting to see in every moment of it. Be it its unusual characters or the film’s crazy script, this film will surely surprise the audience.
