Suddenly, a snippet of gameplay lasting two minutes, originating from Neversoft’s creation, ‘: Future Warfare,’ has emerged online, providing a glimpse into what could have transpired over a decade ago. Dubbed ‘NX1,’ Future Warfare materialized after Neversoft’s transition from Guitar Hero, as revealed by industry expert Brian Bright on his Twitter account.

In the surfaced video snippet, we are presented with an early 2011 game version, unveiling a mission set on the Moon. Based on the showcased content, Future Warfare seemed poised to blend futuristic elements with ‘boots-on-the-ground’ combat, incorporating remastered maps from classic Call of Duty games.

The Unrealized Potential
Established in 1994, Neversoft saw its integration into Infinity Ward by Activision two decades later, with the brand name gradually fading into history. Renowned for the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater series and later the Guitar Hero franchise, Neversoft held a prominent position in the early 2000s. In its later years, the company played a role in the development of several Call of Duty titles.

Online evidence suggests that before its integration, Neversoft was on course to craft its unique Call of Duty instalment – Future Warfare. A two-minute video shared on Twitter depicts a soldier desperately evading an impending assault on a lunar base. The video provides an overview of the available mission list and a fleeting glimpse of what appears to be a remarkably polished creation.

In a comment on the video, Brian Bright clarified that Neversoft was actively working on Future Warfare, and the lunar mission showcased in the video served as a pivotal moment for the team to grasp the intricacies of the engine, experimenting with features like low gravity.

Further elaborating, he mentioned that Future Warfare would have replaced COD Ghosts. By the time the project was discontinued, Neversoft had crafted ‘2 – 3 campaign missions and a plethora of multiplayer content.’

Another comment shared a purported list of multiplayer maps for Future Warfare, featuring titles such as:

  • Legacy Afghan
  • Legacy Crash
  • Legacy Terminal
  • Bin Laden’s Compound
  • Gladiator Assault
  • Merc Mode Map
  • BENK

Regrettably, Future Warfare remained a project unrealized. Ironically, Infinity Ward later undertook Infinite Warfare (2016), bearing striking resemblances to Future Warfare in certain aspects.
