Trevor Roth, COO of Roddenberry Entertainment, took to the stage at SXSW to give fans a tantalizing glimpse of the future of Star Trek. Amidst the buzz and excitement of the event, Roth revealed that an exact plan is in the works for the fourth installment of the Star Trek movie series. While he couldn’t reveal all the exciting details just yet, Roth assured fans that Paramount fully wants the beloved sci-fi universe to return to theaters very soon.
“I can’t say much, but I can say that it’s Paramount’s desire to understand the Star Trek side of the movies and what’s going on there,” Roth shared with attendees. “There is every intention of having a new film coming very soon. There is a lot of mystery around what’s going to happen there. But a plan is being hatched. And we are very excited to see it back on screen.”
While Roth’s words are certainly cause for celebration among lovers, they also delivered a dose of reality, the path to bringing Star Trek back to the movies hasn’t always been a simple one. Despite the best intentions and constitutional plans, practical considerations can often distort things.
“And I would tell you that you want to do it right. And yet, practical things [get in the way],” Roth admitted. “A lot of times people are like, ‘Oh, why isn’t this happening or why isn’t that happening?’ And sometimes those questions are true questions. And sometimes, there’s a lot that you don’t Know that something is going on that could make the job that much more difficult.”
However, Roth’s sense of optimism is evident, and he assured fans that the planning behind the scenes is progressing. From the studio’s perspective, the demand for a new Star Trek film is clearly being acknowledged, and efforts are being made to bring it to reality.
“If you want to do it right you should do it. And even then, practical things [get in the way],” Roth admitted. “A lot of times individuals are like, ‘Oh, why isn’t this happening or why isn’t that happening?’ And sometimes those questions are true questions. And sometimes, there’s a lot going on that you Not knowing that there’s something going on that could make the job as difficult as it is.”
