Ryan Reynolds and Matt Lieberman, screenwriter of “Free Guy,” have teamed up again to bring the classic cartoon character Mighty Mouse to the screen. The character first appeared in the 1942 short film “The Mouse of Tomorrow” and was originally a parody of Superman.
He was short but had extraordinary strength and flight abilities, and often said bold words such as “I’m here to save the world!” For Reynolds, this work comes on the heels of his success in “Deadpool and Wolverine,” which made him a hit in the Marvel Universe, and this is another big step for him after the “Deadpool” series.
According to Variety, Paramount Animation has invited Reynolds’ production company Maximum Effort to work with Lieberman on this project. Lieberman has written works such as “Free Guy”, “The Christmas Chronicles” and “Scooby-Doo!”. Brad Butler will be responsible for the production of the film. Although more details have not been disclosed, this film is undoubtedly another attempt to return to the big screen for Mighty Mouse, and various versions of the character have been actively developed in recent years.

As a classic character, Mighty Mouse has been loved by audiences for decades, with countless theatrical shorts, Saturday morning cartoons, and even several re-interpreted movies. Despite Mighty Mouse’s deep cultural background, previous attempts to make modern versions of the film have failed to make a breakthrough, including attempts with the participation of the screenwriters of “The Meg” and “Red”. However, under the leadership of Reynolds and Lieberman, the new project is obviously rejuvenated.
The cooperation between Reynolds and Lieberman marks that “Mighty Mouse” will follow the successful elements of the two in “Free Guy”, combining action and humor to bring audiences an exciting and funny adventure story. This is not the first cooperation between “Maximum Effort” and Paramount.
The two studios are working together to develop multiple projects, including “Starter Villain”, which is adapted from John Scalzi’s science fiction novel. Paramount’s focus on Mighty Mouse fits in with the current trend of adapting popular animated properties, as they have done with the Sonic the Hedgehog trilogy, Disney’s live-action Lion King, and Warner’s Scooby-Doo!
Traditional versions of the super mouse often rely on exaggerated slapstick elements and playful superhero tropes, and this new version is a natural fit for comedian Reynolds, who successfully portrayed a cocky superhero in Deadpool. In addition, Lieberman’s experience in animation allows him to combine nostalgia with innovation to create a script that is both classic and appealing to modern audiences.
