Nico Parker – In a recent interview on the press tour for her latest movie, Suncoast, Nico Parker, the live-action star of the upcoming How to Train Your Dragon remake, shared insights into the production and the delicate balance between staying faithful to the 2010 original and creating a unique identity for the live-action adaptation.

I think it’s very much its own thing, but I’d like to think so much of that magic is also prevalent in this one. But I think it’s its own film, and it’s its own interpretation and everyone has their own version of a character.

It’s important not to get too wrapped up, especially because the animated ones are so brilliant. It’s like, let’s not try and just do a play by play of that. And if anyone wants that, they can watch the animated ones.

I think it’ll be wonderful, and if it isn’t, I’m having a wonderful time making it anyway. I’ll think it’s wonderful, no matter what.

Directed and written by Dean DeBlois, the mastermind behind the original animated film, the live-action remake stars Mason Thames as Hiccup and Parker as Astrid. Excitement is building as Gerard Butler reprises his role as Stoick the Vast, transitioning from live-action to animation, bringing a sense of continuity to the beloved characters.

Parker expressed her enthusiasm for the project, describing the incredible experience she is having on set. However, she emphasized that the live-action remake will not merely replicate the 2010 movie but will instead carve out its own distinct identity. This approach seeks to avoid the pitfalls that some live-action remakes face, where a lack of originality draws criticism, especially when adapting classic animated films.

The How to Train Your Dragon remake is poised to break away from this trend, promising to offer a fresh and potentially more epic perspective on the original trilogy. The unexpected announcement of the remake surprised fans, but with DeBlois at the helm once again, there’s an opportunity to expand and enhance the narrative on the live-action canvas.

One key collaborator in bringing this vision to life is cinematographer Bill Pope, known for his work on iconic films such as The Matrix trilogy, Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man series, and collaborations with Edgar Wright on films like Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, The World’s End, and Baby Driver. DeBlois recently shared a behind-the-scenes glimpse, revealing the use of IMAX cameras, promising a visually stunning experience that will elevate the already epic story to new heights in live-action.

Considering the immense success of the How to Train Your Dragon trilogy and the subsequent TV show, the decision to explore a live-action adaptation was a logical step for DreamWorks. If the film performs well at the box office, there is speculation that adaptations of the second and third films may follow suit. This prospect excites audiences with the promise of experiencing Cressida Cowell’s magical world in a new format, guided by the visionary filmmaker who originally brought it to life over a decade ago.

As fans eagerly await the release of the How to Train Your Dragon live-action remake, the collaboration between DeBlois, Pope, and a talented cast offers hope for a cinematic journey that respects the source material while delivering a fresh and captivating experience for both longtime fans and newcomers to the beloved franchise.
