Moana 2 directors David Derrick Jr. and Jason Hand recently shared their thoughts on the future of the film’s characters in an interview with Screen Rant. The sequel follows the popular 2016 animation Moana, with original cast members Dwayne Johnson and Auli’i Cravalho continuing to star.
Moana 2 is expected to hit theaters on November 27, and it is particularly noteworthy that the film was originally planned to be launched as a Disney+ TV show, but in the end, Disney decided to bring it to the big screen because of its potential and strong story framework.
During the interview, when asked if they thought the story of Moana would continue in the form of a TV show or a third movie, Derrick Jr. and Hand made their views clear. Derrick Jr. said, “I think it was always meant to be on the big screen.” Hand agreed, “We’ve realized that Moana works really well on the big screen.”
This view is undoubtedly good news for fans who are looking forward to the sequel to Moana, especially since the success of Moana 2 may lay the foundation for a future Moana 3. The epic nature and deep story background of the first Moana provided a lot of creative space, and the audience could enjoy the story while feeling that far-flung adventures were just around the corner.
In addition, the direction of the film’s creation may also affect the future of the Moana series. While Moana may have achieved some success as a series of short films, there is no doubt that the full-length film format can better show the character and the mythological world it inhabits.

The gods and demigods in the film are particularly suitable for the big screen, and the directors and producers are obviously aware of this. Disney obviously sees this potential, which may mean that the Moana series will usher in more films in the future.
