Marcus Smart BOSTON – The TD Garden was filled with emotions on Sunday night as Marcus Smart, the spirited guard who spent nine impactful years with the Boston Celtics, made his emotional return to the city after a surprising offseason trade sent him to the Memphis Grizzlies.

Marcus Smart, known for his relentless energy and passionate play, was unable to join the game due to a right finger injury but was present in spirit. The Celtics organization, along with the fans, seized the opportunity to honour the 2022 Defensive Player of the Year with a touching tribute video showcasing his memorable moments in a Celtics uniform.

Fans erupted in cheers as steals, blocks, and drawn charges from Smart’s illustrious career played on the big screen. The atmosphere became even more electric as Jayson Tatum, leading the Celtics to a decisive 131-91 victory over the Grizzlies, encouraged the crowd to amplify their appreciation for the beloved guard.

“Marcus Smart, he was the fan favourite,” Tatum expressed post-game, triggering “We love Marcus!” chants from the passionate Boston crowd. Smart, visibly moved, acknowledged the love from the fans, bumping his chest and expressing gratitude after the emotional video tribute.

In a post-game interview, Smart conveyed his deep connection with Boston, referring to the city as a “second home.” Despite the challenges of playing in a passionate sports city, Smart expressed his love for the fans and the unique experience of playing in Boston.

“Boston is a second home for me,” Smart shared with reporters. “I spent a little bit over half of my life here, almost. I got here when I was 20. Now, I’m about to be turning 30 in March. So, whew, I can go on all day about everything that I’ve experienced here. Just the way that Boston took me in.”

Tatum, reflecting on the tribute, admitted surprise at Smart’s composure, stating, “I’m surprised he didn’t cry because that was special.”

Smart’s impact in Boston extended beyond the basketball court, as highlighted by Al Horford, who credited Smart for shaping the leadership qualities of current Celtics stars Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. Smart’s involvement in community service, particularly with pediatric cancer patients at Boston Children’s Hospital, and his foundation’s contributions were also recognized. The Celtics honoured Smart as the “Hero Among Us” for his exceptional work in the community.

“I pride myself on being more than just a basketball player,” Smart stated. “And I think being here in the city of Boston has opened that field for me to show who I am as a person.”

As Smart continues his journey with the Memphis Grizzlies, his impact on the Celtics and the city of Boston remains indelible, with Sunday night serving as a poignant reminder of the lasting bond between Smart and the fans who will forever hold him dear.
