Talk of the town, news about Dune 2, specifically about character development and how this would change the narrative in the next installment for the Dune film franchise-the future narrative. Rebecca Ferguson’s portrayal of Lady Jessica’s transformation and the look at the second film hint at a better performance and preparation for Dune 3.
Ferguson shared quite interesting images of some the set work done for Dune: Part Two that show the dramatic change for Lady Jessica. Unlike in the book, in this film, Lady Jessica (played by Rebecca Ferguson) undergoes far more profound changes: she now identifies herself as the Fremen’s Virgin Mary and also goes through an agonizing ritual that may be the beginning of her transformation.
With such dramatic makeup and physical transformations by Ferguson, Ferguson’s role-formation also depicts a degree of commitment to make that character more profound through some images shared by Ferguson, which shows not just transformation but also the process running in Lady Jessica’s heart and mind at the said time. This character is more than the strength and expectations of the main character, Paul, but it also stands for the inner battle of love and sacrifice that the heroine has to make the choice over.
What’s interesting is that the development of Lady Jessica’s character seems to fit into the larger storyline of the upcoming Dune 3, as the changes that occur in the second film not only involve Paul himself but also reflect the expansion of the roles of other characters, such as Lady Jessica, who may become someone who has to face new challenges like never before, especially as she has to face political and psychological changes as the situation on Arrakis changes rapidly.
The second movie of Dune is full of growth in all kinds, from the protagonist’s progress but also into the sophisticated matters of the universe presented in the storyline. In other words, from an important mission led by Lady Jessica for guiding and inspiring hope in Fremen people to prepare Paul for his final transformation into a powerful leader. For example, for Lady Jessica, something that cannot be done in reverse has to be contemplated first.
Although there is nothing seriously clear about Dune 3 for now, the changes we see with regards to Lady Jessica’s character throughout the second film might indicate the production of a more complex, profound storyline in the third film, whether it be through her role as a mentor to Paul or even a power struggle between the characters within her own group. A story that seems to take time but has more depth than we think.
Lastly, it may be very different and dramatic in the third part of Dune, where the mind battle and power of a character like Lady Jessica may have to take a much tougher decision. Overall, Dune 3 may end the journey of obstacles and challenges that all characters will face. It is more than taking over Arrakis or maintaining power to rule; it’s about proving the complexity of human beings and the choices that may never be undone.
