As Groundhog Day approaches, all eyes turn to Punxsutawney Phil and Ms G for their annual weather predictions based on whether they see their shadows.

This year, the National Weather Service anticipates overcast conditions in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, suggesting the possibility of an early spring. Massachusetts, home to Ms G, is also expected to experience cloudy skies, potentially aligning the predictions of the two groundhogs.

In Punxsutawney, the National Weather Service forecasts a mix of rain and snow showers before 7 a.m., with mostly cloudy conditions and a high near 41 degrees. The sky cover ranges from 80% to 90%, creating poor visibility for shadow sightings. These conditions point towards Punxsutawney Phil predicting an early spring.

Ms. G, the Massachusetts groundhog, gained attention last year by contradicting Punxsutawney Phil’s forecast. In 2023, she foresaw an early spring, leading to somewhat inconclusive results as Massachusetts experienced warm, spring-like weather in February and March, followed by a late-winter nor’easter that brought heavy snowfall.

This year, Massachusetts is poised for a potential agreement between the two groundhogs. The forecast predicts overcast skies with 80% to 90% cloud cover on Friday morning, making it challenging for Ms G to see her shadow.

The Weather Service notes that the weekend following Groundhog Day in Massachusetts is expected to be sunny.

For those eager to witness the groundhogs’ predictions, a Livestream of Punxsutawney Phil’s forecast will be available starting at 6 a.m. on Friday. Ms. G’s prediction will take place at Mass Audubon’s Drumlin Farm in Lincoln, Massachusetts, beginning at 10 a.m. Mass Audubon encourages people to tune into their Facebook and Instagram accounts throughout the day for additional information about groundhogs.
