- Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire makes an overwhelming debut, aiming for worldwide box office success.
- Early predictions are that the movie could surpass previous Monsterverse titles, but the weak Chinese market will likely have an impact.
- With competing films such as “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” American box office revenue will also be a focus.
Godzilla x Kong: A New Empire is poised to take over box offices around the world. It’s targeting a staggering $135 million debut in 63 international markets and 3,850 theaters in the United States.
Following the success of Godzilla vs. Kong, which was released last Easter, Warner Bros. has decided to launch its latest film in the same festive framework. The first film made $48 million in its domestic opening weekend, marking a significant return to movie theaters after the hiatus caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. If early estimates hold true for A New Empire, this would rank as the third-highest domestic opening in the MonsterVerse franchise. It follows “Godzilla” (2014) and “Kong: Skull Island” (2017). Previews begin Thursday in the U.S. and Canada at 3 p.m. The film will also leverage premium ticket offerings such as Imax, PLF, 4DX, ScreenX, and DBox.
The production cost was $135 million, excluding marketing costs, with 75% of the funding coming from Legendary and the remaining 25% from Warner Bros.
This second Godzilla/Kong collaboration, directed by Adam Wingard, begins rolling out internationally on Wednesday, premiering in major markets including Spain and South Korea. It will expand to Italy, Australia and Latin America on Thursday, with the UK and China joining on Friday.

According to presales, the international launch is in the $80 million to $85 million range, with domestic projections around $50 million. These numbers suggest a softer opening compared to its predecessor, Godzilla vs. Kong. The previous film debuted with $150 million in similar overseas markets. Factors influencing this difference include changing market conditions, particularly in China. Hollywood releases are down here compared to past years.
Looking at the comparison of openings in China, Godzilla will compete with upcoming titles such as. However, despite the difficulties, the film is expected to perform strongly in Asia and Latin America, although expectations differ for the European market.
While several European markets were still under capacity restrictions at the time of Godzilla vs. Kong’s release, the current Godzilla x Kong release aligns with historical release patterns. Additionally, increased competition in the market environment may impact a film’s performance compared to its predecessors.
Notable absentees from the initial release are France, Germany, and the Middle East, with Japan set to open at a later date on April 26th.
In the United States, Sony’s Ghostbusters: The Frozen Empire is expected to experience a 65% drop in its second week, grossing approximately $15 million at the box office. However, the Gil Kennan-directed sequel has made more than £47m domestically, marking a solid performance at the box office.
