Gladiator 2: Denzel Washington Shocking Talks Possible Macrinus Spinoff

Denzel Washington revealed in an interview with ET that he has not considered a spin-off for his character Macrinus from Gladiator 2, saying that the decision is up to director Ridley Scott.

Paramount Pictures

Ridley Scott‘s return to directing Gladiator 2 after the hugely successful 2000 film garnered a worldwide following. The film will no longer focus on the main character Maximus (played by Russell Crowe) but will instead follow the life of Lucius (Paul Mescal), the son of Maximus and Lucilla, who grows up to be one of the main characters in the story. The film will continue to focus on the Roman Empire, where Lucius will face betrayal and fight for survival in the gladiatorial arena.

However, in a recent interview with ET, Denzel Washington, who reprises his role as “Macrinus,” who aims to control Rome, spoke about the possibility of a spinoff that could center around his character. While nothing has been confirmed, he expressed interest in the idea and left it up to Ridley Scott to make the decision.

I haven’t thought about it at all,” Washington said in an interview with ET. “That’s a question for Ridley. I mean, I don’t know.” While his answer was somewhat evasive about the character’s future, it did show respect for Ridley Scott’s vision, the director and the man behind the empire.

Denzel Washington’s take on the role of Macrinus in Gladiator 2 adds depth to a character who wasn’t particularly prominent in the first film. However, Washington’s complexity and drive for the role make it all the more interesting. Macrinus is an ambitious former slave determined to take control of Rome. He plays a key role in training Lucius into a powerful gladiator so he can fight and exact revenge on the battlefield.

While Denzel said he’s not aware of any plans for a spin-off, his character’s central role in Gladiator 2 opens the door for new ways to develop the character, potentially turning it into a standalone project or spin-off in the future.

Ridley Scott’s continued focus on new characters, such as Lucius and Macrinus, in addition to the focus on the restoration of the Roman Empire, also shows the expansion of the Gladiator universe, which is not just about the battles on the battlefield, but also reflects politics, betrayal, and the quest for higher power.

In Gladiator 2, Lucius is not only the heir of Maximus, but he is also someone who has to bear the burden of facing the challenges of those who were once in power, including the decision to choose one side or the other in the fight for justice and power. The character of Macrinus, played by Denzel Washington, acts as a tool to train Lucius to be stronger in the fight for survival in a world full of cruelty.

Although the film is still in the production stage and it is still unknown what the outcome will be, the choice to present the gladiator battles from a new perspective, with a variety of characters to help drive the story, makes Gladiator 2 one of the most anticipated films of the year.
