The art of bringing action sequences to life in the film industry is a challenging one, and especially so when it comes to such vast and dynamic locations as airports. But director Jaume Collet-Serra has accomplished that in his new Netflix action film “Carry-On.” He has managed to capture the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on screen on a busy day, and has taken a very interesting approach in the process.

The film stars Taron Egerton (the Kingsman star) as a young TSA agent who comes into contact with a mysterious passenger (Jason Bateman) who is in the airport with deadly intentions, and the main plot of the film revolves around this confrontation. “Carry-On” gives viewers a fast-paced action experience, but one interesting thing that happened during its production was that the director used New Orleans’ Louis Armstrong Airport to capture the reality of LAX.

In a recent conversation with Tudum, Jaume Collet-Serra revealed that his film is set in Los Angeles, but in reality it was produced in the old terminal of Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY) in New Orleans. This terminal was designed and decorated as LAX, giving the film crew a chance to access parts of the massive airport that normal travelers never get to see.

Collet-Serra said of the process, “We took over the old MSY [Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport] in New Orleans and redesigned/decorated it to look like LAX. It was very exciting for us to have the whole place to ourselves and explore all the areas of the airport that we don’t normally see as travelers.”

Finding the action in an aviation setting

A busy and complex location like LAX may be the perfect setup for an action film, but it also has a great deal of parts that are often hidden in real life. The unseen areas of the airport, such as back-end security areas, airline gates, and customs, contributed significantly to the film’s unique setting. These areas were specifically designed and shot to add to the film’s intensity and realism.

The action scenes also have a wonderful freshness and pace, and Collet-Serra’s directing style turned the entire film into a surreal and exhilarating experience. The tense events unfolding inside the airport are portrayed brilliantly in the film, and it connects the audience to experiences that are normally out of their reach.

“Carry-On”: A Hit or a Miss?

“Carry-On” is a perfect blend of action and thrills that keeps the audience on the edge of their seats throughout the film. Taron Egerton’s performance is superb, and Jason Bateman’s mysterious role adds to the suspense of the film. Director Jaume Collet-Serra has taken a new direction with this film, where a unique combination of technical prowess and strong storytelling is seen.

The most special thing about this film is that it can be seen not only as an action film, but it is also an engaging and exciting suspense thriller, set in a high-intensity environment like an airport.

“Carry-On” started streaming on Netflix on December 13, and if you are a fan of action and thrillers, this movie should definitely be on your list.
