Even nine weeks after it was released, Beetlejuice 2 is still collections it in at the box office, breaking the record for the highest-grossing PG-13 film in history, with a domestic total of $292 million, after the film was re-released over the weekend. The classic 1988 sequel features first-time director Tim Burton who actually made the first film become such a global phenomenon. That one picked up where that left off and followed Astrid, Lydia’s daughter, who accidentally opens the portal to the afterlife.
Beetlejuice has been revived as fans and critics alike take a bow to the star-making quality show. Original stars Michael Keaton and Wynonna Ryder return to the franchise. With the addition of newcomers Catherine O’Hara, Jenna Ortega, and Willem Dafoe to spice up the story with the same crazy, colorful style that Tim Burton has done so well in his previous films, the film, while not initially as popular as other sequels this year, has continued to grow in the box office despite time passing on.

According to Collider, Beetlejuice back to theaters and pulled another $2 million over the weekend making it the 75th film in the record book; and it’s more importantly on the PG-13 scale. That is some strong number. Beetlejuice already surpassed hits such as Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Man of Steel on the list in place now at number 73. It just needs to earn a few hundred thousand more dollars to surpass Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and rise further in the rankings.
What’s interesting is that even though it didn’t earn as much money as was expected on opening weekend, the film is still doing great and collecting moolah over the last few weeks. It is a tremendous feat to have a sequel after almost three decades. The fact that Beetlejuice has been sustained over such a long period by the audiences shows that it still enjoys a considerable following and a fan base. While this may not have been a box office smash, it’s indeed a household name when it comes to fans of classic films and revisiting Tim Burton’s directorial style.

In that respect, given the film’s success, while not something that put a crack into this year’s biggest blockbusters, say, perhaps Kung Fu Panda 4 or Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which have raked in more than $100 million already, it has managed to survive the box office for the past couple of weeks and generate interest for the future. It may not be #1 or #2 for this year, but it’s a good chance that unless there is a late-season blockbuster like Gladiator II, Moana 2, or Wicked, which might have a shot at bumping other films off their roosts, it might find itself in the top 10 highest-grossing films of 2024.
In an age where most movies are incorporating new techniques and technologies, it’s a good way to stay relevant. In making the Beetlejuice film, the Beetlejuice remake remains solid in the original allure of the quirky narrative: surreal fun, lively performances, and memorable character appeal. It has that peculiar directing style of Tim Burton that makes Beetlejuice still been talked about among the audiences who fancy fantasy films with surreal charm. We have to follow up in the near future to see if Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will be able to generate more income, especially when many movies that are expected to make high money, such as Gladiator II and Moana 2, are coming out soon.
